Social activists on Saturday cried foul over the rampant discharge of sewage water into the old market storm water nullah and demanded immediate action by the authorities concerned to plug the flow to save people from a health hazard.

Activist Laurel Abranches pointed out that there’s a continuous flow of sewage water into the old market nullah right opposite the District and Sessions court building, emanating foul odour all around the place. “When we had highlighted the sewage discharge a couple of months ago, the PWD officials maintained that it was not sewage water, but rain water flowing in the area. The rains have now stopped, but the flow of water continues into the storm water nullah, contaminating the water body,” Abranches said.

He further pointed out that the underground sewage line passing through the old market area is damaged, with the PWD authorities discharging the sewage water into the low lying fields or the storm water drains. “Our elected representatives talk big, but have failed to take up the issue of sewage which has now threatened to affect the residents in a big way,” he said, while demanding action.

Avinash Tavares said the discharge of sewage water into the water nullah should stop immediately, adding that the authorities have no right to pollute the water bodies.
