The accused son who carried out a life-threatening assault on his mother by hacking her head with a screwdriver was apparently forced to study engineering although he wanted to pursue his career in science.

Sources in the police informed that the accused was mentally stressed as he was preparing for an engineering paper which had remained back.

The accused was apparently upset as he was forced to study engineering although he wanted to continue his education in science and blamed his mother for his failure, the source said.

The mentally stressed son has now been shifted to the Institute of Psychiatry and Human Behaviour (IPHB), Bambolim even as his mother has been battling for life at the Goa Medical College and Hospital.

A Mapusa court remanded the accused to 14 days police custody. With the permission of the court, police later admitted him to the IPHB.

Initial police investigations have revealed that the accused attacked his mother out of anger as he was undergoing mental stress.

On Saturday, the accused Akash Dixit (26) attacked his mother Anjali Dixit (60) with a screwdriver and later attempted to choke her to death with his hands in his apartment flat at Shetya-vaddo, Mapusa.

The incident came to light after the next door neighbour heard loud cries of the mother who was being attacked inside the flat.

She was first admitted to the North Goa District Hospital and later shifted to the GMC where she is undergoing treatment.

Police said her condition continues to be critical. Mapusa Police are investigating further.
