Sonsodo bio-remediation: focus now shifts to CM-led panel

The sub-committee headed by Margao MLA Digambar Kamat on Tuesday resolved to knock the doors of the High Powered Coordination Committee on Sonsodo headed by Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar to find a solution to the vexed issue of bio-remediation at the Sonsodo waste dumping site.

This has been necessitated as the bio-remediation consultant is insisting that the Margao civic body make available a landfill site before commencing the work, even as the latter expressed its inability to do so.
Now, one solution that is expected to be deliberated by the HPCC is whether the bio-remediation contractor can be allowed to use the Fomento Green landfill site as a stop-gap arrangement and simultaneously construct an alternate landfill site at the existing dumping site.
After coming out of the sub-committee meeting, chairman Digambar Kamat said that the panel will take the matter before the HPCC so that the viewpoints expressed by the consultant, contractor, GSUDA and the MMC are discussed threadbare before arriving at a solution. “The Indore-based consultant has asked for a piece of land at the existing dumpyard to set up a landfill site. The contractor has said he cannot take up the work without this site which is required to dump the inert materials. The MMC says the landfill site under construction at Sonsodo belongs to Fomento Green. All these issues will be discussed with the HPCC,” Kamat said.
Curtorim MLA Reginaldo Lourenco pointed out that a solution to the Sonsodo imbroglio is being worked out, adding that the entire issue will be discussed and resolved in a transparent manner.
Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai was forthright in admitting that no progress has been made by the sub-committee on the question of bio-remediation of the existing waste at Sonsodo. “Honestly, the deliberations by the sub committee are a waste of time. Nothing has gone forward this time. Only big announcements are made, but the ground reality remains unchanged,” Vijai said, adding that only the HPCC headed by the Chief Minister can take a call on the bio-remediation project.
Meanwhile, the Indore-based consultant has told Sardesdai that the bio-remediation project can commence if the contractor is allowed to use the Fomento Green landfill site, with a condition that work on the alternate landfill site also starts immediately.
