As thick black smoke billowed from Sonsodo on Thursday noon after the fire incident, the effect could be felt as far as Gogol and Borda with the smoke settling down in the thickly populated residential areas.
With the bitter memories of the May 25 Sonsodo fire still fresh in the minds of the authorities, District Collector, Ajit Roy pointblank told the Margao Municipal Council officials to mobilise logistics keeping in mind the requirements needed not just for a day’s operation, but an operation which may extend for a couple of days.
The district collector told the officials to illuminate the entire area to facilitate late night operation to cap the fire. He called for mobilising logistics such as trucks, mud, power generators and the fire tenders, all required to help bring the fire under control.
Residents from the Chowgule college area and Gogol complained that the smell of burnt plastic as the fire is believed to have reduced to ashes tonnes of plastic and dry waste.
With the wind blowing towards the Amrutnagar, Gogol and Borda areas throughout the day, the effect was more felt in these areas than in the adjoining Raia and Curtorim villages, which had to bear the brunt of the May 25 Sonsodo fire.
