The Margao Municipal Council on Monday submitted a road map in the High Court to resolve the Sonsodo waste imbroglio, but the Court has told the civic body to submit a time line how the municipality intends to cap the burning waste issue plaguing the commercial capital.
The civic body has been told to submit the time line on Wednesday, explaining in detail the time MMC would require to achieve the target in clearing the Sonsodo mess.
The Sonsodo waste management issue came up before the High Court on Monday when the Margao municipal Chief Officer Manuel Barretto filed a compliance report as directed by the Court at the last date of hearing.
Sources said the Chief Officer is believed to have placed on record before the Court a host of measures MMC had adopted at the special meeting held last month. The works includes carting out and remediation of the piled up waste inside the Sonsodo waste management shed, roping in a contractor to treat the daily wet waste till a permanent mechanism is put in place, setting up of infrastructure and logistics at the shed to streamline the waste management.
The Court, however, told the Chief Officer to come out with a time line on how the civic body intends to achieve the decisions taken by the council.
At the last date of hearing, the High Court had reminded MMC that in terms of the statutory duties imposed, the Council is required to take effective steps for handling and managing day-to-day solid waste that is generated.
In fact, the High Court had sounded a note of caution to the civic body that if there is laxity of these issues, the same would prima facie amount to the dereliction of statutory duties.
While directing MMC to ensure that necessary steps are taken for handling and managing of day-to-day solid waste that is generated within its jurisdiction, the Court had directed the Chief Officer to file a compliance report on April 10.
