The South Goa District Congress Committee will kick-start the app-based membership drive in the district from January 5, which will culminate in the constitution of the Block Committees, which were left vacant after some of the Congress MLAs quit the party to embrace the BJP on July 9 last.

South Goa District Congress President, Joe Dias said though the app-based membership drive was delayed for some time due to technical glitches, the drive will start from the New Year in all the blocks of the South Goa Lok Sabha constituency.

Addressing the media on Monday to extend Christmas greetings for the people of South Goa, Dias said though the Congress MLAs had left the party, people of South Goa in particular and Goa in general are still firmly rooted with the Congress. “We expect the ensuing membership drive to be a great success,” he said, adding that the block panels will fall in place once the membership drive is taken to its logical conclusion.

A number of block committee members, including executive committee and even the presidents had quit the Congress to join the BJP along with the MLAs on July 9, leaving the block panels virtually defunct.

Meanwhile, the district president has slammed the government for the soaring prices of essential commodities, leaving the common man in deep trouble. “Most of the BJP leaders had hit the streets to protest rising prices of items when the Congress was in power between 2004-14. But, the BJP leaders are now not seen around to the rescue of the citizens as some of the essential commodities are not beyond the reach of the common man,” he said.
