MARGAO
South Goa MP Captain Viriato Fernandes has proposed a cold storage facility at Margao, besides refrigerated cargo services for fish and marine product exports from Goa to enhance the State’s export potential.

He was attending the 22nd meeting of the Konkan Railway Users Consultative Committee held on Thursday in Goa. Various issues related to improving passenger amenities, strengthening safety measures, and exploring avenues for enhancing the revenue of Konkan Railway Corporation (KRC) were discussed during the meeting.

Besides proposing setting up a cold storage facility at Margao, the South Goa MP proposed establishment of a Konkan Railway Museum to highlight the achievements of the Corporation in building infrastructure across India.

He has further called for organising awareness programmes on the various job opportunities available in Indian Railways, including KRC, to guide Goan youth towards railway careers.

He said the Konkan Railway Corporation should take up Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives in Goa and install lifts/escalators from the Northern side (Margao City/Aquem side) to Platforms 2 & 3 at Margao Railway Station, as the existing steep walkway makes access difficult for commuters.

“I have also called upon the authorities to explore the feasibility of constructing a flyover bridge at Shirgaon Railway Crossing, as the level crossing gate remains shut for long period due to high frequency of trains, leading to delay in office going staff to reach their work places, as also delay for ambulances in carrying patients during emergency situations. This has been a long-pending demand of local villagers,” he said, even as the MP expressed confidence that these proposals would improve passenger convenience and safety while also creating new opportunities for growth and jobs in Goa.
