With the monsoon just two months away, Chairperson of the South Goa District Disaster Management and District Collector, Egna Cleetus, held a review meeting on monsoon preparedness on Wednesday, with a focus on the fencing of mining pits, survey of dangerous trees, and demolition of unsafe buildings.
The District Collector chaired a high-level meeting at the District Collectorate, which was attended by the District Police Chief, Tikam Singh, and representatives of various line departments.
After reviewing the level of preparedness, the District Collector issued a host of instructions to the government agencies to complete the monsoon preparedness work within the set timeframe.
Instructions were issued to survey trees that are in dangerous conditions and to take necessary action. Given that mining pits have reported drowning incidents during the monsoons, the Collector has issued strict instructions to complete the fencing of mining pits.
With the South Goa district hosting several old and unsafe buildings, the meeting reviewed the situation concerning these buildings. In fact, instructions were issued during the meeting to execute the demolition of dangerous buildings where demolition orders have already been issued.
Additionally, respective agencies have been directed to initiate action on landslide- and flood-prone areas in the district.
Officers have also been asked to depute nodal officers from various departments to take prompt action in the event of any incident.
