South Goa steps up tobacco control with mapping

A meeting of the District Level Co-ordination Committee for Tobacco Control chaired by Additional Collector-II Ramesh Gaonkar on Thursday has decided to undertake mapping of sale points of tobacco near schools, higher secondary schools and Colleges in the South Goa district.

The meeting has further resolved to increase Enforcement Drives in Talukas which have been inactive so far.

Consumer rights activist Lorna Fernandes told the media after the meeting that the participants have decided to launch a Special Enforcement Drive during the ensuing Tourism Season.

She said that No Smoking and COTPA Sections Signage will be installed on the beaches of South Goa. It was further decided to seek compliance of concerned school authorities of every taluka on the installation of signage on the compound walls of all schools, higher secondary schools, she added.

In another decision, the meeting has decided on the removal of sellers of Tobacco from footpaths in Municipal Council & Village Panchayat areas across the district.
