The forest department’s (Wildlife) South Marine Range Headquarters is now protecting 56 Olive Ridley turtle eggs in a Nest at the Turtle Rehabilitation Centre (TRC) in Galgibaga-Canacona.
According to sources, an Olive Ridley turtle visited Galgibaga beach at about 4.30 am on Wednesday, dug a pit and laid 56 eggs, before disappearing into the Arabian Sea.
Forest department’s rescuers later transplanted all 56 eggs into a man-made pit at the nesting site of TRC Galgibaga and cordoned off the area till the eggs are hatched.
This will be the first Olive Ridley nesting pit at Galgibaga TRC, and the third turtle nest in Canacona.
The other turtle nursery at Agonda TRC is already protecting two turtle nests.
A total of 309 Olive Ridley eggs are being protected by the forest department (wildlife) in Canacona.
