South MP asks CM to preserve old Portuguese buildings, forts

MARGAO

South Goa MP Francisco Sardinha on Tuesday urged Chief Minister Pramod Sawant to protect and preserve the old Portuguese buildings and forts for posterity to showcase that the Portuguese had once ruled Goa for over 450 years.

Saying the motorists are facing the menace of pot-holed roads, South Goa MP Francisco Sardinha on Tuesday suggested that the government post traffic police near the potholes to challan riders in the event water splashes on the cops after the vehicle lands in the potholes.

Addressing the media, Sardinha reiterated that that its now decades since the Portuguese had gone, leaving both good and bad things behind. “While the people of Goa have given up the bad things during the last 62 years, there’s a need to protect the Portuguese buildings and forts for posterity. Otherwise, those born post-1970 as well as the tourists will not have any idea of how the Portuguese had ruled over Goa,” he said.

Expressing his concern over the collapse of a slab at a Vasco school, Sardinha said he had been telling the government to repair the school buildings to ensure the safety of the students. “Today, the ceiling of the primary and secondary government school buildings is falling down. Parents fear to send their wards to school,” he said, while demanding that the educational inspectors or officer should be penalized for not carrying out the repairs.

On the government’s Janata Darbar initiative, the MP said people are coming for the darbars for results, saying the government should not waste their time and the time of the public if they cannot resolve the grievances.
