The South District Road Safety Council on Thursday has directed panchayats and municipalities in the district to ensure that no vehicles are parked on the roads, hampering smooth movement of traffic resulting in accidents.
The meeting chaired by Additional Collector, South Prasanna Acharya also resolved to come down heavily on students riding/driving without valid licenses. The panel took cognizance of additional directions received from the Supreme Court for improvement of road safety in the state.
In this respect, directions have been issued to municipalities and panchayats to ensure that there’s no compromise on the road width in their respective jurisdictions and that vehicles do not encroach on the roadways meant for smooth movement of traffic.
In this connection, the panel has sought fortnightly reports from panchayat and municipality authorities to ensure that the directions are implemented in both letter and spirit.
The burning issue of potholed roads figured at the district council meeting with members pointing out that many roads are still dotted with potholes, causing accidents.
A PWD representative pointed out that estimates have been prepared for improvement of certain roads, but work is held up for want of funds and sanction. Members pointed out that many a road has been found uneven after the potholes were filled with concrete.
The issue over unauthorized parking of trucks along the NH at Cuncolim, near NUSI hospital came up for discussion after the same was raised by member Lorna Fernandes.
Since the trucks are parked illegally, Lorna questioned why the trucks, which come to the Konkan railway container depot at Balli, are not parked near the depot and asked the council to write a letter to KR seeking clarifications on the issue.
DySP traffic, Prabodh Shirwaikar submitted a proposal before the Council for installation of concrete dividers at the Old market Circle, on the plea that motorists are violating the rules around the slip road.
After the meeting, the Additional Collector said the Council took note of the suggestions made by the members and said same will be implemented by the concerned agencies.
