Against the backdrop of rising drug abuse cases with Goan youth falling prey to illicit activity, Superintendent of Police Nidhin Valsan has reiterated the side effects of narcotics while urging people to venture into exercising and physical activities.
“Drugs are always destructive. It destroys an individual and the family. On the other hand, fitness activities nurture one’s personality. Therefore, we emphasize sports and fitness activities,” he said while addressing the Old Goa Police, students and the general public during the Fit India Movement launched in the jurisdiction of Old Goa Police Station.
Valsan, a cancer survivor, who also successfully completed the Ironman 70.3 race within a year of recovery, claimed that the movement is a way of taking the fitness message to the public at large.
All through this month, the Old Goa PS has chalked out a plan to rope in social groups, educational institutions, government and private agencies, etc to participate in the fitness movement that will also carry awareness messages to protect against cyber frauds, drug abuse, and other crime.
Day one of the movement was held from the Church to the ferry wharf and back, where the attendees took part in walk/run, yoga, breathing exercises and other strength exercises.
