Split in secular vote helps BJP’s Tuemkar romp home in Davorlim

A split in the secular vote cost the Congress party dearly as the BJP retained the Davorlim seat with a comfortable margin of 1593 votes.

As anticipated, sitting BJP ZP member Ulhas Tuemkar romped home with an easy victory in a six-cornered fight that virtually saw the split in the secular vote.

While Ulhas polled 3610 votes, the secular vote was split amongst as many as four candidates, including Congress candidate Murtuza Kuknoor. While Murtuza polled 2017 votes, Abdul Kadir (1332), Floriano Fernandes (1097) and Socorro Gomes (1463) were the other candidates, who together polled around 5500-plus votes, benefiting the BJP candidate, who retained the seat by a margin of 1593 votes.
