Just before embarking on a three-day visit to Goa, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) supremo Arvind Kejriwal made a pointed remark on social media ” that the BJP-Congress alliance has been running the government in Goa for the past 13 years.
At first glance, the statement seemed simple. However, the underlying message to party volunteers was unmistakably clear ” AAP will contest the upcoming elections in Goa independently. This sets the stage for a direct showdown with the Congress and other non-BJP parties, particularly in the minority-dominated Salcete taluka.
Political observers warn that a head-on contest between AAP and Congress in Salcete could split the anti-BJP vote, potentially benefiting the BJP and Independent candidates in closely contested constituencies in Salcete and other talukas.
Indeed, there are growing concerns within political circles that Salcete could witness a repeat of the 2020 Zilla Panchayat polls and the 2022 Assembly elections, which saw a division of the non-BJP vote.
AAP seeks to consolidate base in Salcete
Kejriwal’s remarks gain further significance in the context of recent statements by AAP MLAs Venzy Viegas and Cruz Silva, who publicly declared that the party would no longer align with the Congress, accusing the principal opposition party of betrayal.
Over the weekend, Kejriwal visited Raia village ” part of the Curtorim Assembly constituency ” to interact with party volunteers from South Goa.
Sources suggest that AAP’s strategy is clear: consolidate its base in Benaulim and Velim, while strategically expanding into Curtorim, Nuvem, Cuncolim, Navelim, and other traditional Congress strongholds.
The party’s growing momentum in Salcete and beyond is widely viewed as a calculated move to test the political waters ahead of the upcoming Zilla Panchayat elections. Party insiders hint that, regardless of whether an alliance with the Congress materialises for the 2027 Assembly elections, AAP is determined to make its presence felt now ” aiming to win as many Zilla Panchayat seats as possible and approach any future alliance talks from a position of strength.
Unity versus fragmentation: The key question
The Aam Aadmi Party’s decision to go solo in the upcoming Zilla Panchayat (ZP) polls has become a hot topic in Salcete, where nine out of the 25 ZP seats are up for grabs.
Political observers believe that the non-BJP parties could potentially sweep all nine seats ” but only if they contest the elections together, replicating the INDI Alliance model.
The decision to fight separately has sparked concern and debate across Salcete’s countryside, especially among minority communities who have consistently voted to keep the BJP out of power. Many are now questioning how voters, particularly in minority-dominated areas, will respond to this fractured opposition strategy ” especially at a time when public sentiment is clearly in favour of presenting a united front to defeat the BJP.
This question takes on added significance in the wake of the recent success of the INDI Alliance in the Lok Sabha elections. In Salcete, the electorate rallied behind Congress candidate Captain Viriato Fernandes, handing him a resounding victory ” a result seen as a clear mandate for unity among anti-BJP forces.
Whether AAP’s solo gamble will yield dividends or backfire remains to be seen. But one thing is clear ” the political landscape in Salcete is once again at a crossroads, with unity versus fragmentation emerging as the central theme ahead of the polls.
