The inspection was necessitated after people residing in the vicinity had highlighted the issue during the Chimbel gram sabha and the MLA had assured to work out a solution on the issue.
At the inspection, junior engineers Mahesh Shetty and Vitorino Sequeira pointed out that the service road on the Sai Baba temple side is lower than that on the other side, due to which flooding occurs as the outlet is blocked.
As a solution, the engineers suggested that there is a need to raise the plinth of this road so that rain water is directed towards the other side, where the drain will carry the water down the slope and into the fields.
However, state highways engineers said the construction of the drain on the steep slope should be undertaken by the PWD as it doesn't come under their gambit.
MLA Fernandes then directed the PWD JE Dattaram Bicholkar, who arrived at the site, to chalk out a plan of constructing a drain on the slope on an urgent basis.
Later, speaking to The Goan, Fernandes said a timeframe could not be set for the completion of the work as there are two departments involved. "There is a procedure that has to be followed and it could take 3-4 months for the work to start," he added.
Some residents residing in the vicinity of the area were also present during the
inspection.
St Cruz MLA inspects underpass at Chimbel
St Cruz MLA Tony Fernandes along with the state highways officials inspected the underpass near Sai Baba temple, Chimbel, on Thursday to ascertain ways to prevent flooding of the area during rains.
