State conducts cyclone, blackout mock drill

PANAJI

In a bid to strengthen disaster preparedness, the Home Guard and Civil Defence Organisation, Goa, conducted a large-scale mock drill on cyclone disaster and blackout management at the GRP Ground in Altinho on April 24.

Held under directions from the Ministry of Home Affairs, the exercise began at 4 pm with approval from the Director General of Police and Commandant General of Home Guards. A total of 76 officials and volunteers from Panaji and Mormugao divisions participated, simulating real-time emergency protocols.

The drill focused on coordination among Civil Defence motor transport units, wardens and volunteers to ensure swift response during power outages and security threats. It also involved the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), first-aid teams from St John Ambulance, and communication experts using ham radio sets to maintain connectivity during the simulated blackout.

Officials assessed response efficiency within a 15-minute window. The exercise was monitored by Deputy Commandant General Ezilda Dias and Superintendent of Police Francisco Corte. Medical officers Dr Viraj Parab and Jovito Lopes guided casualty handling.

Authorities said such drills are key to improving public awareness and ensuring readiness to protect lives and infrastructure during natural disasters.
