State has 6,750 MW solar potential, taps just 14.5%

PANAJI

Goa has tapped just 14.5 per cent of its identified solar energy potential of 6,750 MW, even as the State continues to depend heavily on coal-based power, which accounted for nearly 60 per cent of its electricity procurement in 2025-26.

According to data available on NITI Aayog’s India Climate & Energy Dashboard (ICED), the State currently has 979 MW of installed solar capacity against the estimated solar resource potential of 6,750 MW. The figures highlight a substantial gap between the renewable energy potential available in the State and the capacity actually harnessed.

The dashboard data for 2026-27 shows that solar rooftop systems dominate Goa’s installed renewable generation capacity. Rooftop solar accounts for around 98 per cent of the State’s installed renewable capacity mix, while bio-power contributes about 1.94 per cent and small hydro just 0.05 per cent.

Despite the relatively high solar potential, the State's power procurement continues to be dominated by conventional sources. For FY 2025-26, the Electricity department's power-purchase data displayed on the ICED shows 59.56 per cent of Goa’s electricity procurement coming from coal-based generation.

Other renewable sources contributed 12.45 per cent, while nuclear power accounted for 6.31 per cent. Wind contributed 4.59 per cent, while solar power accounted for 4.20 per cent of the procurement mix.

The figures assume significance as Goa's electricity demand continues to climb, increasing the pressure on the State to secure additional power. The dashboard's monthly peak-demand data shows Goa's peak demand touching 891 MW in April 2026, up from 824 MW in April 2025-an increase of around 8 per cent in a year.

NITI Aayog describes the dashboard as a platform providing state-level data on energy and renewable-energy potential, drawing primarily from official sources. It also cautions that some datasets may involve assumptions or derived estimates.

Simulated emergencies put Goa’s disaster-response systems to test

PANAJIFrom a cargo building collapsing at Mopa and leaking hazardous chemicals to fishermen being rescued from rough seas, Goa’s disaster-response machinery was put through a series of simulated emergencies across the State on Thursday as part of a multi-state mock exercise. The full-scale exercise, coordinated by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) in collaboration with the Goa State Disaster Management Authority, was designed to test how agencies respond when…
