Accusing the BJP government of failing to accord due recognition to Marathi, MG Party leader and Ponda MLA Lavoo Mamledar has predicted that the agitation of Marathi Rajbhasha Samiti (MRS) would reach to a logical conclusion.
Mamledar was addressing a gathering of Marathi lovers who took part in an agitation conducted by the MRS at Dada Vaidya Chowk at Ponda on Monday.
The Marathi activists first staged a rally in Ponda to spread awareness of their issue, before culminating at the Dada Vaidya Chowk for a meeting.
MRS president G R Dhavalikar, former Panaji mayor Ashok Naik, R G Desai, ZP member Mohan Verenkar, former MLA Rohidas Naik and Machindra Chari were among those present at the protest meet.
Mamledar claimed that the status to Marathi was sidelined by all governments since the last 30 years.
“All governments have done injustice to Marathi. Even the BJP government failed to give justice to Marathi, despite promises by them,” said Mamledar, while pledging his support to the Marathi activists.
Speaking on the occasion Dhavalikar said that BJP had promised to fulfil MRS's demand during the last assembly election
“At Bodgeshwar devasthan in Mapusa, the BJP had promised to give official status to Marathi, if they came to power. But it has failed to do so and hence we have had to agitate to highlight their failed promise,” Dhavalikar said.
“If the BJP government fails to table a bill according official status to Marathi in the next assembly session, it would prove that they had lied.
According to him, all educational institutions, panchayat, temples and other cultural institutions make use of Marathi language, but it is still ignored by government for officials status.
“The BJP government has failed to keep its promise and now they have proved that it was a political gimmick to attain power.
MRS has decided to intensify its agitation and has planned a protest in Margao on December 16.
