Benaulim MLA Churchill Alemao has batted for wearing of helmets by two-wheeler riders, but has reiterated his stand that traffic police should not unnecessarily mete out harassment to the tourists visiting the state.
While welcoming Chief Minister Pramod Sawant’s directives to the Goa police not to mete out harassment to the tourists visiting the state, Churchill, however, made a fervent plea to the two-wheeler riders to wear helmet to save lives.
“An accident can prove fatal or can make a rider incapacitated for life in the event of an accident for not wearing the helmet,” he said, while urging the riders to wear helmets and ensure safety.
He, however, reiterated his charge that tourists visitors, more so domestic tourists have showed a decline because of the harassment meted out by the police.
“Unlike Mumbai or Pune, you will find policemen with challan books everywhere, targeting visitors to the state. This should stop immediately if tourism is to grow. Already, the arrivals of foreign tourists have showed a decline after the Thomas Cook episode. Tourism will be hard hit if the local tourists also stop visiting the state because of police harassment,” he added.
