MARGAO
A structure housing a shop at the Margao Municipal Council-owned Gandhi Market collapsed in the early hours of Sunday.
Fortunately, no one was injured in the incident, which has once again brought the upkeep and maintenance of the market by the civic body into focus.
The incident is believed to have occurred at around 4.30 am, when a portion of the shop, which previously housed the meat complex and is located adjoining the toilet, collapsed.
Another portion of the shop reportedly gave way at around 11 am.
Vendor Riyan, who had come to the shop at around 5 am, told the media that he found the structure collapsed when he reached the site.
“Inquiries later revealed that the structure had come down at around 4.30 am. No one was injured in the incident,” he said.
Leader of the Gandhi Market Vegetable and Readymade Garments Vendors’ Association, Rajendra Ajgaonkar, told the media that the city’s presiding deity, Lord Damodar, had averted a major tragedy.
“Had the structure come down after the opening of the market, when it is bustling with vegetable business, it would have ended in a tragedy,” Ajgaonkar said.
He demanded that the Margao Municipal Council repair the structure as well as the adjoining toilet to prevent any such incident in the future.
