Strange it may seem, but true that a young student of government school, Colva climbed up the flag pole to unfurl the flag and save the school management and the guests from embarrassment.
The incident occurred when the students, teachers and staff of the government school at Colva gathered for the flag hoisting ceremony on Tuesday morning. As usual, the school invited the local sarpanch and panch members as guests for the flag unfurling function.
When the Sarpanch Anthony Fernandes was given the honour to unfurl the flag, the tricolor was stuck up at the flag pole. Since the flag could not unfurl from the rolled position, leaving the school management and the guests in an embarrassed state, a school student immediately climbed up the flag pole and did the honours. No doubt, the child saved the day for the guests and the school authorities, but the incident soon went viral, showing the Sarpanch trying to unfurl the flag and a school student climbing up the pole to unfurl the flag.
Sarpanch Anthony Fernandes, however, cleared misconceptions about the incident. He said the Panchayat is in no way involved in organizing the function and that he had attended the function to unfurl the flag as the village Sarpanch. "It has been a practice by the government primary school to invite the local sarpanch to unfurl the flag. The panchayat is no way connected with the flag hoisting ceremony," Anthony clarified.
