A differently-abled person pursuing a vocation course at the Sanjay School in Porvorim was seriously injured on Wednesday when a railing gave way and he fell off the second floor of the building.
According to Porvorim police, the incident took place at about 10.15 am when Sidney D’Souza from Aldona along with his mother had gone to the second floor of the government building, where the Aadhaar card office is located, near the Government High school at Porvorim. The Sanjay School vocational stream is located on the ground floor of the same building.
Porvorim Police said the Sidney’s mother had gone to Aadhaar card office to submit some documents and Sidney was waiting in the corridor near the railings outside the Aadhaar card office.
All of a sudden, the railing gave way and Sidney fell off the second floor and sustained grievous injuries. He was shifted to the Goa Medical College Hospital at Bambolim for treatment by the staff of the Sanjay School vocational stream, which is located on the ground floor.
Sanjay is reported to be unconscious after suffering injuries to his spine.
Porvorim police have registered a case and are investigating.
The incident prompted a strong criticism from Aldona MLA Adv Carlos Alvares Ferreira.
“A Special Child from Aldona had a major fall from the second floor of the Education Department Building above Sanjay School Porvorim as the railing came down with him when his mother had gone to fetch the paperwork for an Aadhar Card, leaving him with a spinal injury, a couple of cracked ribs and a blood clot on the side of his body,” stated Adv Ferreira.
“An unfortunate incident above Sanjay School is an eye opener for the Goa Government to take stock of the poor infrastructure of their current institutions. Most unfortunate that children being sent to special schools do not have requisite safety. I demand an inquiry as this is a cognisable offence,” he added.
Meanwhile, Chairperson of Sanjay Centre for Special Education Sidharth Kuncalienker has clarified that the incident had not taken place in the Sanjay School building, which is located near the Porvorim Police station.
The Sanjay Centre for Special Education is running its vocational stream for special children on the ground floor of the government building located near the Government High school at Porvorim.”
“The student was not in the classroom. He had gone on the second floor along with his mother to the Aadhaar card office where the incident took place. Sanjay Centre has nothing to do with this incident as this is a government building. Due to miscommunication, people have assumed that the incident had occurred in the Sanjay school,” said Kuncalienker.
