A panch of the Salvador do Mundo has been booked on charges of accepting a bribe of Rs 18 lakh in connection with issuing of construction license for villas at Saloi.
Porvorim Police said a building contractor Sunil Dessai had filed a police complaint stating that he had submitted a proposal to the Salvador do Mundo panchayat for construction license to build villas in a property, but his file was rejected twice by the panchayat.
Dessai claimed he had submitted his file a third time for the construction license, when Salvador do Mundo Panch Krishnakant Chodankar allegedly demanded a bribe of Rs 33 lakh.
After negotiations and to avoid further delay in construction, Dessai claimed he agreed to pay an amount of Rs 18 lakh.
Accordingly, Dessai claimed he had paid a bribe of Rs 18 lakh to Chodankar on June 5 near the panchayat building and on June 6, the construction license was issued.
Porvorim police registered a case against panch member Krishnakant Chodankar on August 29 under Section 7 of Prevention of Corruption Act and under Section 506 of IPC.
Police are investigating the case under the supervision of Porvorim DySP Vishwesh Karpe. Attempts were made to contact Krishnakant Chodankar, but his phone was switched off.
