After over a week of uncertainty, the Belagavi wholesale vegetable market bounced back to normalcy as supplies to Goa were streamlined on Thursday.
About 150 vehicles carrying a huge quantity of vegetables from across the vegetable growing hinterland around Belagavi had crowded both venues of the wholesale vegetable markets on the outskirts of the city.
Goa is expected to have plenty of vegetables in the next couple of days as more than 40 vehicles along with vehicles of the Goa Horticulture Corporation were expected to reach Goa by late Thursday evening.
The grim situation that continued for over a week due to Cyclone Tauktae, rains and inconvenience faced by farmers and traders is expected to improve as vegetables are likely to arrive at the Belagavi wholesale market.
While prices of some vegetables, including some leafy vegetables, crashed due to the large stocks, prices of most vegetables were steady and Goans are likely to get cheaper vegetables in next couple of days.
After the indefinite strike by wholesale traders was called off on Wednesday, farmers started arriving the Belagavi wholesale market from Wednesday midnight.
The two wholesale markets were crowded on Thursday morning due to the arrival of large number of vehicles carrying fresh vegetables.
“Farmers are in a hurry to sell their yield fearing arrival of early monsoon, after which harvesting the vegetables will be rather difficult. Moreover, due to the huge yield, rates of cabbage, green chilli, cauliflower and leafy vegetables have crashed,” wholesaler Aditya Patil said.
