The surge in fatal accidents has once again gripped Goa. In just one week, about 20 accidents have been reported, claiming the lives of around six persons. The most recent one occurred when Tukaram Jangli, a pedestrian, was struck by a truck in Bethora-Ponda.
This case has added to the pedestrian casualties, with two others including an NRI, falling victim to reckless driving. A 68-year-old Portuguese national Santana Tecla de Almeida, who lost her life when she came under a private bus while crossing an internal road at the Panaji bus stand is another case. She was scheduled to fly back to the United Kingdom the following day. Similarly, Gopal Chandra Pradhan, a middle-aged labourer from Odisha died after being hit by a car while walking along the Kadamba bypass.
The dangers extend beyond pedestrians. Mary Fanny D'Souza, a 68-year-old pillion rider, whose two-wheeler collided with a truck on the national highway at Porvorim died while her husband, Jerome D'Souza “ rider of the two-wheeler - sustained serious injuries. The couple had recently returned from Australia.
While several self-accidents are also reported, the State further witnessed multiple-vehicle collisions on the Calapor bypass, a truck overturning on the Bambolim-Agassaim highway, and a car plunging into a valley at Amboli Ghat. Fortunately, in some cases, the persons involved escaped unhurt or sustained simple injuries.
