Surge in dengue cases in Canacona raises concerns

Over two dozen cases reported in taluka since May 20

In a sudden increase, over two dozen cases of dengue have been detected in Canacona taluka, with 20 cases alone found in Gaondongrem village in the last 10 days.

The Health Team is actively conducting a fogging drive in the affected areas. Many dengue patients are receiving treatment at SGDH “ Margao and GMC in Bambolim, while some are hospitalised in CHC Canacona itself.

For the first time, starting from 20th May, some patients with dengue symptoms treated at CHC were found with NS-1 +ve virus. These patients were all residents of Ziltawadi in Canacona. A team of 10-12 health workers immediately began surveillance of the area and found nine dengue positive cases in Ziltawadi alone. More cases were detected in neighbouring areas, with around 20 cases in Talem, Satorlim, and Karvem areas of Gaondongrem village.

Some cases were also detected in Amone (Poinguinim) and in Loliem village. All affected persons are receiving treatment in CHC Canacona, SGDH-Margao, and GMC in Bambolim.

The Health Service Field team, led by Dr Diwakarji Velip and Sanitary Inspector Pranay Naik, is actively fogging affected and neighbouring areas. They are also advising residents on healthy water storage practices.

“As summer peaks and water becomes scarce, people store water in barrels, sometimes leaving them uncovered. People are advised to store water safely and avoid leaving stagnant water in their areas,” said Sanitary Inspector Pranay Naik.

Naik also explained how the dengue virus spreads in localities and requested people to practice healthy measures to prevent further spread of dengue cases.
