Mandrem police have arrested the owner and driver of an SUV which was involved in a road mishap at Morjim which left one woman dead and two others injured late Wednesday night.
According to police reports, Roheet Rathod of Aradi-Candolim, who is the owner of the Mahindra Thar vehicle, allowed his private vehicle on rental basis for self-drive to Vikram Ashok Gaba (45) of Yamuna Nagar, Haryana.
Gaba allegedly drove the Thar vehicle in a rash and negligent manner, without ensuring proper care and caution, endangering human life, while proceeding from Ashvem Mandrem towards Morjim direction.
On reaching near the Surmai Restaurant at Kancholem wada, Morjim-Pernem at about 10.50 pm, the SUV first dashed a Honda Activa scooter which was parked on the left side of the road and then dashed an ongoing Yamaha Fascino scooter and Honda Grazia scooter which were proceeding ahead of the Thar vehicle in the same direction. The Thar vehicle then struck a stationary Tata Tempo vehicle.
With the impact, Debashish Samal (32) of Odisha, rider of Yamaha Fascino scooter, and Gatish Samal (35) of Odisha, rider of the Honda Grazia scooter sustained injuries.
An unknown woman, who was pillion rider on the Yamaha Fascino scooter, was brought dead to the Tuem CHC.
After the accident, the accused, Vikram Gaba, driver of the Thar vehicle, abandoned the vehicle and fled from the spot, without giving medical attention to the injured and without informing Police.
Police registered an offence against Rathod and Gaba under Sections 281, 125(a), 125(b), 106 of BNS 2023 and Sec. 192, 134(a)(b) of M.V. Act and later arrested them in the connection. PSI Jaydeep R Palyekar is conducting further investigation into the case.
