Citizens caught unawares as no power cuts were scheduled

For, Sunday saw power outages in many areas, including the commercial capital and Cuncolim, for hours, leaving the power consumers to wonder whether the department has ordered another shut down in a space of one day without prior intimation.
Many parts of the commercial capital, including Pajifond, had power failure on Sunday morning. When The Goan contacted Assistant Engineer, Margao division, Carlos Fernandes, to shed light on the power failure in Margao city on Sunday morning, he attributed the situation to the incoming power supply received from Xeldem. “I have been told that there’s been some problem at Xeldom in the morning. Power was later restored,” he added.
At Cuncolim, people had to go without power supply for a good part of Sunday morning. Most of the town had no power supply till noon, leaving the residents high and dry.
There was no one around to explain to the people whether the power department has taken another shut down on Sunday or whether the State has been hit non supply of power from Xeldem. It was only after Executive Engineer, Santosh Lolienkar was contacted that he attributed the power failure to the snapping of high tension line at Masconi. “The town was hit by the power failure because of the snapping of the conductor at Masconi. Our officials and linesmen were on the job to restore the supply at the earliest,’ Lolienkar said.
Meanwhile, Power Minister Pandurang Madkaikar will have a meeting with MLAs and Ministers from South in the conference room of the South Goa District Collectorate on May 2, at 11 am, to discuss the pre-monsoon measures in the constituencies spread across the district.
Sources said the power minister is expected to have detailed discussions with the MLA and power officials on the pre-monsoon measures.
