Mandrem MLA Jit Arolkar on Saturday assured the fishermen that a swimming zone with buoy rope barriers would be moved from Vitthaldas Wada to Temb Wada in Morjim beach.
Arolkar was interacting with fishermen who had complained that the buoy rope barriers had been an obstacle to traditional fishing business at the Vitthaldas Wada stretch of the beach.
Authorities had designated a swimming zone at Vitthaldas Wada and had placed buoy rope barriers to ensure the safety of people swimming in the sea.
Local fishermen, however, claimed that fishing activity through traditional methods had been a practice in the area for ages.
They stated that the government’s move to create a swimming zone with buoy rope barriers at Vitthaldas Wada had caused obstacles to them, their boats and their fishing nets
The fishermen also claimed that they had not been informed in advance that buoy rope barriers were being placed in the sea as part of the swimming zone.
After listening to the grievances of the local fishermen, Arolkar assured that the swimming zone with buoy rope barriers would be moved out of Vitthaldas Wada.
Later speaking to reporters, Arolkar said the government had set up swimming zones at a number of beaches in the State to ensure safety of tourists swimming in the sea.
“However, this swimming zone at Vitthaldas Wada had been hindering traditional fishing activity and so, the swimming zone at Vitthaldas Wada will be shifted to the Temb Wada area of Morjim beach,” said Arolkar.
