PANAJI
Deputy Chief Minister Francis D'Souza has appealed to the newly-elected chairpersons and councillors of the municipalities to support the endeavors of the government in keeping the areas coming within their jurisdiction clean and garbage free. He said, garbage is a major problem and therefore top priority needs to be accorded by the local self government bodies such as municipalities to take up the issue of cleanliness with due seriousness and tackle the problem of garbage menace through its proper disposal.
D'Souza was speaking at a function organized by department of Urban Development Municipal Administration and Goa State Urban Development Agency to felicitate the newly-elected councillors of municipalities in the State, at Sanskriti Bhavan, Patto, Panaji.
Speaking further D'Souza said, councillors of all municipalities will be sent for training to Hyderabad and Mumbai in groups of 30 and the cost will be borne by the State government. He said first batch of Mapusa and Pernem municipality will be sent in the current month itself.
Deputy Chief Minister further appealed to the newly-elected councillors to conduct the meetings regularly and deliberate as per conduct of business rule. He told them to take resolutions properly and at the same time don't compel the government to interfere in the areas of municipal administration being a statutory body.
Deputy chief minister also appealed to the chairperson and deputy chairperson to form a forum so that they can come together and discuss the problems faced by them in their areas and also developmental issues can be discussed in their forum's meetings. He congratulated the newly-elected chairpersons and other councillors and asked them to bring reforms in functioning of their respective municipalities.
Sanjay Krishna Shet from Sanguem municipality who was elected as councillor for seven consecutive times and Sudhir Kandolkar of Mapusa municipality who won six times were felicitated by by the deputy chief minister.
Earlier Elvis Gomes, Director welcomed. Gaurav Pokle, project consultant of Swaccha Bharat Abhiyaan gave an audio-video presentation on vision document towards making Swaccha Bharat urban a reality and Celsa Antao, project consultant National Urban Livelihood Mission gave presentation about the eradication of poverty with the help of urban poor.
Satish Dessai, deputy director was also present.
