MARGAO
Favouring a final settlement to the Sonsodo garbage imbroglio at the earliest, TCP Minister,Vijai Sardesai on Monday invited Chairman of Fomento Group Auduth Timblo to come up with a proposal and make a presentation to solve the vexed issue, even as he said the government will soon resume mining of the existing dump yard at Sonsodo.
Reacting to Sardesai's statement, Fomento Director Lume Pereira said the company is prepared to come out with a white paper on Sonsodo, adding that the company will be fully prepared to take over the waste management operation if the Margao Municipal Council allows it to do so.
"The Chairman of Fomento Group of companies had taken the initiative to clear the garbage mess at Sonsodo. He has an emotional attachment to the issue because he is a Goan and his mother stays close by. Let us also hear from the company whether the Margao civic body has been extending any help or only creating hurdles for the company," Sardesai said.
Saying that the management of Sonsodo plant is the responsibility of Fomento, Sardesai said, "Let Fomento make a power-point presentation on the status of the plant at Sonsodo within one week before the municipality takes further action. I invite Fomento Chairman Auduth Timblo to come personally with a power point presentation so that the problem is settled once and for all," he said.
Reacting to the TCP Minister's statement made during his visit to the Margao Municipal Council on Monday, Fomento Director Lume Pereira said, "We are happy to hear the statement of Sardesai that we should present a white paper on the issue. If the municipality allows us to take over the whole thing, we are ready."
Pereira, however, said that Fomento is mandated to manage waste at the treatment plant once the municipality delivers the waste. "When we mean delivery of waste, it does not mean dumping the waste. Under the Solid Waste Management rules, the municipality is bound to collect waste door to door. In fact, collecting the waste and segregating the same is the responsibility of the civic body. Our job starts once the segregated waste comes within our premises. The problem is that the garbage has to be segregated in the house before it comes to the plant. There's another problem. Even segregated waste from the household gets mixed before it comes to the plant," he added.
Saying that segregation of the waste at the plant site is not the responsibility of Fomento, Pereira said that garbage has to be collected door to door in a segregated form and duly delivered to the plant in a segregated manner.
