He was speaking at a programme to felicitate meritorious students from Bicholim. The function was organised by Deendayal Jansewa Pratishthan in association with Bhartiya Janata Yuwa Morcha at Deendayal hall Bicholim on Thursday evening in memory of BJP youth member late Gaurish Dangi.
“The quality of education in the State, except in some education institutions, is dwindling day by day because teachers lack the required knowledge in the educational field,” Parrikar said.
“Reading habits should be inculcated and there should be participation in sports activity. In Goa, the government has implemented special schemes, through which first class students can get free education from the interest generated from the amount invested, interest free scheme and special scheme of Goa government,” he said.
He added that his knowledge at IIT had not only helped him while he was defence minister, but also as the chief minister, while taking difficult decisions. “Students can do wonders and this entirely depends on how quality the education is,” the chief minister said.
He said though there is acute need of education in mother tongue, it is also true that students should impart lessons in other medium of instructions to become ideal citizens of India.   Parrikar added that the main aim of education is to help the students to become self dependent.  “There should be a change in marking system in Goa that can create good image of educational sector. Quality education in Goa will be the hallmark in future,” he added.
Chairman of Goa Education Development Corporation Kanta Patnekar also spoke on the occasion.   On the occasion, meritorious students from Bicholim were felicitated by Parrikar.
Bicholim MLA Rajesh Patnekar, BMC cheif Satish Gaonkar, Bicholim BJP Block president Vallabh Salkar and Yuwa Morcha president Sudan Govekar were present.
