Telecom stakeholders underscore need to upgrade tech

Stakeholders, including officials of the department of Telecommunications attending the annual West Zone Conference on security related matters on Wednesday has underscored the need to develop and upgrade technology to keep cyber fraudsters at bay.

The Maharashtra LSA, Department of Telecommunications (DoT) organized the annual Western Region Conference on security-related matters under the Director General Telecom Headquarters at a starred resort in Cavelossim on Wednesday. 

Speaking on the occasion, Chakraborty pointed out that it is necessary to develop and upgrade the technology to be one step ahead of fraudsters who are focussing on new technology. 

Secretary, Telecom and Chairman Digital Communication Commission Dr Neeraj Mittal, addressing the conference via VC,  stressed on the need to take measures to plug the loopholes in cyber security and improve the network.

He said the introduction of technology has helped to keep the fraudsters at bay to a large extent, while emphasizing on the need to bring awareness amongst the people on cybercrimes.

In his address, Goa DGP Alok Kumar pointed out that the Goa Police has recovered 50 stolen and lost mobile phones in the last two months through the telecom app. He said the recovered mobiles hae been returned to the original owners at a function held yesterday. 

The DGP also highlighted the role played by Goa Police in cracking down on cross-border cybercrime involving Myanmar, Thailand.

The Department of Telecom has launched Sanchar Saathi portal in April 2023 and Sachar Saathi Mobile based application in January 2025, wherein citizens can lodge Complaints related to lost mobile handsets, Cyber Security Fraads including Impersonation & Financial Frauds, Spams/Suspicious calls etc. 

The Sanchar Saathi application portal makes use of Artificial Intelligence and has disconnected more than four crore connections in the last two years found involved in fraudulent suspicious activities. Around six Lakh Mobile Telephone Handsets have been recovered by the police in the last two years.
