Trees uprooted in different parts of Bardez on Wednesday and damaged the Shri Bhoomipurush temple in Reis Magos and two vehicles in Verem, as rains continued for the second day and disrupted normal life in the taluka.
According to reports, trees got uprooted fell at 23 places in different parts of the taluka.
A large tree fell on the rear of the Shri Bhoomipurush temple at Sonarbhat in Reis Magos, causing extensive damage to the temple.
Elsewhere, the protection wall of a house collapsed in Savlem-Pilerne, while a mango tree and a retaining wall in the courtyard of a bungalow in Verem collapsed on a two-wheeler and a car.
Trees also got uprooted and fell on power lines in Revora, Tivim, Mapusa, Siolim, Porvorim and other places. Firefighters from the Mapusa, Porvorim and Pilerne fire stations attended to various calls and cleared the fallen trees. The electricity department later restored power supply to the affected areas.
On Wednesday morning, Deputy Speaker and Mapusa MLA Joshua D'Souza chaired a meeting with government officials at his residence to review the flood-like situation that arose in Mapusa on Tuesday and instructed them to immediately take up pre-monsoon works.
Deputy Collectors Varsha Parab and Pandurang Gad, Mapusa Municipal Council Chairperson Priya Mishal, and officials from the PWD, electricity, water resources and MMC were present at the meeting.
