State Health Minister Vishwajit Rane on Saturday stated that temples play a vital role as centres of cultural preservation and village development, urging citizens to work collectively to maintain and enhance their significance.
He was speaking after performing the foundation stone laying ceremony (Bhumipujan) for the reconstruction of the Shri Mahadev Temple at Nanus-Betkekarwada in the Valpoi Municipal area. The ceremony was conducted with traditional religious rituals in the presence of devotees and local representatives.
The event was attended by Valpoi Municipal Council Chairperson Prasanna Gawas, Councillor Shaikh Faisal, temple committee members, priests, and a large gathering of villagers.
Addressing the gathering, Rane emphasized that temples in rural Goa serve as important institutions for safeguarding social and religious values. He said such places strengthen unity and preserve cultural heritage, adding that every villager should contribute towards the upkeep and development of their local temple.
Highlighting the cultural importance of Nanus village, the Minister referred to the annual Sateri Temple Jatra as a defining feature that attracts thousands of devotees and brings recognition to the area. He stressed the need to preserve and promote such traditions.
Describing Sattari taluka as a “Devbhoomi” (land of gods), Rane pointed to the region’s rich religious heritage, including prominent temples and festivals such as the Shri Brahmani Mahamaya Temple at Koparde, the Chorotsav of Karanjol, and the Ghodemodni festival at Thane-Sattari.
Rane further stated that the construction of the Shri Mahadev Temple fulfills a long-pending demand of local residents and devotees. He assured that the project, being undertaken through his personal initiative, would be completed at the earliest. He also promised continued focus on the overall development of the village.
Speaking on the occasion, Councillor Shaikh Faisal said that several development initiatives have been implemented in the area under Rane’s leadership and appealed to residents to support ongoing efforts for further progress.
The programme began with traditional prayers and rituals marking the commencement of the temple construction.
