While briefing the media on the port’s performance for 2016-17, Jayakumar was responding to queries by media persons on MPT’s handling of certain cargo, instead of opting for cleaner cargo which would lower dust pollution in Vasco city.
“There is no definition as dirty cargo but the manner it is handled leads to the problems and if agencies concerned handle cargo as per international norms,” explained Jayakumar.
“When residents expressed concern about coal dust and wood chip pollution, we immediately swung into action and directed the agency concerned to curtail the stacking of cargo and to cover it properly. We also started using a mist cannon to spray water and control the pollution.”
“As far as wood chip dust is concerned, we also directed the agencies concerned to cover the cargo properly and to clear it immediately,” added Jayakumar.
Responding to the handling of gypsum cargo, Jayakumar stated that loose handling of gypsum is being stopped and only bagged gypsum would be handled in future.
“We have informed the handlers to evacuate more wood chip cargo at night time from 10 pm to 6 am and with this, the stacking will also come down and pollution will also be reduced,” said Jayakumar.
“We are installing additional pollution monitoring equipment at a cost of Rs 1.1 crore to monitor pollution levels on continuous basis at all strategic points. Besides this, Shore Electric supply planned at the breakwater berth at the cost of Rs. 5 crores to reduce air pollution and is expected to be completed by December.”
When sought to know the status of the MPT ground at Baina, which was proposed to be a container stacking yard, Jayakumar replied: “Respecting the sentiments of residents, the ground will be upgraded and will be used for different sports activities.”
