Thieves break open home with owner's pickaxe, steal cash, gold

An owner’s pickaxe left out in the open came in handy for thieves, who broke open the back door of a house in Madel and decamped with cash and gold worth Rs 4.5 lakh late Saturday night.

“The complainant, Sandeep Shet Tanavde and his family of Faaz Colony, Madel in Tivim had gone out for a New Year’s party on December 31. When they arrived home at around 3 am, they found the back door open,” police informed.

Tanavde reported that Rs 2.93 lakh in cash and gold consisting of bangles, earrings, finger ring, mangalsutra and a gold coin, all weighing around 68 grams, was stolen from the house.

Mapusa Police pressed the dog squad into service, but failed to get any clues. PSI Elidio Fernandes is investigating the case.
