MARGAO
Margao’s old bus stand is now known for all the wrong reasons. It has not only become a dumping ground for accident vehicles, but also for all sorts of garbage, and all these right under the nose of South Goa district police headquarters.
Haphazard parking is also rampant in the area, which is home to bustling fast food gaddas that could be attributed to the garbage mess. People frequent these gaddas to have omelette and wada pav till late in the night.
The bus stand is now fast turning out to be a favourite waste dumping site for unscrupulous citizens and businessmen alike.
In fact, waste is seen amidst the accident vehicles dumped around, giving the entire place a bad look, leaving citizens to wonder how come the authorities, including the Margao Municipal Council and the police turn a blind eye to the illegal dumping of waste.
Sources say that waste dumped at the bus stand at the site facing the district police headquarters is normally cleared up by the Margao municipality.
But, there are days when the waste remains at the site for days together, making the place an eyesore.
“Waste dumping at the old bus stand indeed gives a bad look to the entire place, more so when waste and litter is scattered all over the place,” remarked a citizen, who visits the area every day to drop and collect her ward from the adjoining school.
She wondered why the police, which has its headquarters right opposite the bus stand, don’t maintain a tab on the miscreants dumping the waste since it is an offence to dump waste at an unauthorized place.
The old bus stand, which is owned by the Margao Municipal Council, was proposed to be developed as a multi-storied parking lot in the past, but in vain.
At the recent meeting, MMC councillors had resolved to recommend to the South Goa Planning and Development Authority (SGPDA) to
notify the place as a multi-storied parking lot after making provision for the parking
of buses.
