Sancoale Zilla Panchayat member Anita Thorat was on Monday elected as the new Chairperson of the South Goa Zilla Panchayat.

Thorat’s election as the new ZP chief implies that the BJP has maintained its stranglehold over the South Goa district Panchayat body.

Her election was a mere formality given that the Presiding Officer had received her lone nomination paper for the vacant post. The election was necessitated after outgoing ZP Chairperson Sanjana Velip had tendered her resignation.

After she was formally declared as the new South Goa ZP Chairperson, Thorat said she would work to bring about administrative reforms and push to make the long-pending Zilla bhavan into a reality.

With just 3-4 months to go for curtains to come down for the current ZP term to end around November-December, the new district Panchayat Chief said the Zilla Panchayat would set in motion the process to identify land for the Zilla Bhavan.

“We have just three-four months for the current term to end. Hence, we will take steps to identify the land so that the Zilla Panchayat bhavan becomes a reality at the earliest”, she said.

On plans to bring about administrative reforms, Thorat stressed on the need to streamline the process of sanctioning files and bring about transparency in the administration.

“The Zilla panchayat adopts so many resolutions moved by the members. These resolutions are then forwarded to the respective departments for implementation. We will do the follow up so that the resolutions are implemented by the concerned departments”, she added.
