GPCC Vice President Sankalp Amonkar on Thursday threatened to quit and split the Congress party vertically, if there was a change of leadership and if the party entertained some MLAs who had deserted the party in the past to join the BJP, but wanted to return to the Congress.
“A large group comprising active youth members, members of various party frontal organisations, PCC members and blocks of the party will meet AICC Goa Desk incharge Dinesh Gundu Rao and place their demands, before taking the next call on whether to stay in the party or quit the party,” Amonkar told reporters.
“One of the demands would be to have the CM candidate fixed prior to elections to avoid further confusion.”
“We have been fighting against the present government for the past five years, but none of these senior leaders who are eyeing the GPCC president’s post were present.”
“These leaders are now creating an environment to change party leadership and we will not allow the plan of these non-active leaders.”
“Our group will not remain in the party if such non-active leaders are made party president or if there is any change in leadership now. This decision to quit the party can happen in the next five days if the views of members, who worked hard despite the pandemic, are not considered," warned Amonkar.
He said the BJP consists of only a few original leaders, while the rest had migrated from Congress party to the BJP.
“Now, we hear that these MLAs who had left the Congress are now regretting and want to return to the Congress. We hear they are in touch with some leaders and asking them to become party president and facilitate their arrival in the party while promising to win on the Congress ticket and form the Congress government.”
“We will not allow even one of these MLAs who deserted the party to be taken back and this is our challenge and if the AICC Goa Desk incharge does not agree, we will quit the party," said Amonkar.
A number of senior party leaders, including former Union Minister Eduardo Faleiro, block presidents nad other office bearers including the district presidents Joe Dias and Bhike were amongst those who called on the Goa desk in-charge on Thursday. Rao is expected to continue the interaction with the party leaders and workers on Friday as well. Party MLAs are expected to call on him on Friday.
