A major landslide was reported along the road leading to ferry point near the Cortalim junction circle on Thursday evening. Three parked bikes were buried in the rubble and had to be recovered using a JCB machine.
Cortalim MLA Anton Vas who was in the assembly session immediately rushed to the site from Porvorim after being informed about the landslide.
"The incident happened in the evening and I alerted the fire brigade, the Mamlatdar and disaster management to rush to the site, as I left the assembly session. There were three bikes that were parked along the road and got buried in the mud that slid down on the road along with trees and boulders during the landslide. While the locals immediately removed one bike, we recovered the other two bikes using a JCB. The landslide has occured because this is a soft mud and there has been heavy torrential rains continuously for so many days.
"The area needs a retaining wall along the 500-metre stretch and I had raised this issue in the previous assembly session as well. In fact I had proposed the retaining walls for this area and Sontrant area which are both landslide prone areas. The proposal was put forth and I had even informed the PWD department about the urgency of the retaining wall. The entire stretch of the 500 metres along this route has become very dangerous because the landslide will only aggravate from here and the small stones are still rolling down as we speak," said Vas.
Vas said that many people would park their bikes along the road and leave for work by bus from the bus stand in the area.
" We appeal to the people not to park their bikes in this area as this has become very dangerous and I appeal the people not to use this road at all , atleast till the end of monsoons because there can be another landslide at any given time. We are also directing the authorities to immediately close this road for public use at least till the end of monsoons. The people moving through this road towards ferry point can use the alternative route available," said Vas.
