Three persons were injured as violent clashes that broke out between a shack operator and a group of fishermen at Agonda on Wednesday.
After an operator of a shack and huts was accused of attacking two fishermen from Parvem-Agonda, a group of irate fishermen retaliated against the shack operator, besides ransacking his shack and damaging property.
While one fisherman suffered neck injuries and is admitted in GMC hospital, while the other fisheman was discharged after receiving five stitches on his head. Both were reportedly injured after the shack operator attacked them with a chopper.
According to Canacona police, trouble had been brewing since the last three days, when the local fishermen tried to secure their fishing nets after coming from a fishing trip.
It is learnt that the shack owner entered into an argument with the fishermen for using the space in front of his shack, which was being used to place tables and chairs.
When the two fishermen went again to secure their nets, the shack operator reportedly came out with a sharp weapon in his hands and attacked the duo.
As the two fishermen were being rushed for medical treatment, a group of fishermen rushed to meet the sarpanch in the panchayat office to seek an explanation on how a person without permissions from the local body could operate shacks and huts, besides blocking fishermen from access to the beach sand.
As the irate fishermen could not meet the sarpanch, many of them then proceeded to the shack and huts, ransacking the property. The mob also attacked the shack operator, who was later admitted to hospital.
A police team then rushed to the site and tried to stop the angry crowd from doing further damage to the shack and huts. Police was seen at the site till late evening, even as locals demanded strong action against the accused persons.
No one has been booked in the offence so far as investigations into the incident are underway, police told The Goan.
