Three Sancoale panchas oppose shifting of gram sabha to Zuarinagar cyclone shelter

Three panch members of Sancoale have objected to the panchayat’s decision to shift the gram sabha to the newly inaugurated cyclone shelter at Zuarinagar on Sunday.

Speaking to reporters after submitting a memorandum to the BDO, the panchas, Tulshidas Naik, Maurelio Carvalho and Nidhi Naik, claimed that the panchayat had not taken the panch members into confidence before taking the decision.

“The gram sabha was not convened in June and the BDO issued an order to conduct a gram sabha and we got this information through a letter signed by Girish Pillai as acting sarpanch, a term which has no provision in Panchayati Raj Act,” said Tulshidas Naik.

“The acting sarpanch has neither taken a resolution nor taken panch members into confidence on shifting the venue to Zuarinagar. We have never heard of any gram sabha convened at Zuarinagar in the last 50 years, a location which is not in close proximity to the panchayat as mandated.

“Secondly, the chairman of the Zuarinagar Cyclone Shelter is Cortalim MLA Anton Vas, who has not been informed and he has also  written to the BDO raising hi objections.”

He claimed that the previous gram sabha was wound up half-way and criminal cases were filed on seven people who raised questions during the gram sabha.

“We want the BDO to cancel this gram sabha which is not as per his order and location and reschedule it back to a different area, failing which we along with all villagers will sit on a protest in the panchayat,” warned Naik
