Department suspends a total of 566 licences, most for drunken driving this year

Interestingly, almost half the licenses suspended this year were for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Using mobile phone while driving came in as the close second.
As per guidelines laid down by the Supreme Court committee on road safety, the apex court in 2015 directed all union territories and states, to actively implement road safety laws and to suspend driving license for not less than three months for over speeding, red light jumping, carrying persons in goods carriages, driving vehicles under the influence of alcohol and drugs and using mobile phone while driving a vehicle.
Overloading goods carriages has been included as the sixth offence in this list by authorities in Goa.
Between January 2015 and May 15, 2017, Goa traffic police department has forwarded a whopping 9,284 driving licenses to the transport department for suspension as against the 566 suspended by the department so far.
Marking an exponential rise over the 97 reports forwarded in 2015 seeking suspension of licenses, Goa traffic police in 2016 forwarded 8,160 reports to the department in 2016 for suspension of licenses.
