Goa is in for a beef shortage after consignments from Karnataka were stopped following confusion relating to the central government’s notification prohibiting sale of cattle through animal markets for slaughter. Beef traders in the State, meanwhile, say stocks will last till Sunday.
The Ministry of Environment had earlier last week notified regulation under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960 that prohibits the sale of cattle through animal markets for slaughter across the country.
The notification has affected the quantity of beef entering Goa as there is considerable shortage of beef in Karnataka with cattle slaughter being temporarily stopped.
Speaking to The Goan about the situation, president of the Qureshi Meat Traders Association, Manna Bepari said Karnataka border police have stopped entry of beef into the State.
“Under normal circumstances we bring cattle to be slaughtered from Karnataka along with the required certificates. But for the past two days the Karnataka border police have stopped our vehicles. We have stock that will last till Sunday, but after that, there will be no beef,” he said.
Most of Goa’s stock comes from the village of Ramnagar in Karnataka, but Bepari said the notification has created confusion in the area and fearing cow vigilantes, farmers have stopped sending cattle to be slaughtered.
Beef traders have said the government has so far been supportive of their condition and have demanded that Goa government initiates a dialogue with Karnataka officials to settle the matter.
Speaking about the notification itself, Bepari said it was unfair and without thought. “The decision to ban sale of cattle is without any thought. Farmers who own cattle usually give it for slaughtering when it is old and doesn’t give milk. Through its life time, the farmer spends over Rs 4 lakh on taking care of it and gets around Rs 5 lakh when sold to slaughter houses. What will the farmers to do once it is of no use and if they aren’t even able to sell it,” asks Bepari.

Belagavi agents stop supplies to Goa
BELAGAVI: The Centre’s notification prohibiting the sale of cattle through animal markets across the country has had a severe impact on the supply of beef to local markets, as well as markets in Goa.
While supplies of beef in the local market have dwindled, demand for chicken has increased resulting in steep hike in chicken prices across Karnataka.
“We supply beef to Goa and other places, but due to the new notification, supply of cattle in the market has stopped completely affecting the slaughter in the slaughter houses and cold storages as well,” Mushtaq Bepari, one of the suppliers and owners of a cold storage, told The Goan.
“Since last week, most suppliers in Belagavi region have stopped supplies to Goa as there is a tremendous scarcity of cattle in the market.”
However, most beef traders doing business with Goa have urged authorities to rethink about the decision of imposing ban on sale of cattle for butcheries, which they said is already showing its impact.
“No one is ready to sell the cattle due to the ban. If this situation continues, we are afraid that beef markets
