In a big relief to vendors and staff at the Vasco vegetable market, the Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) will soon build a toilet block behind the vegetable market in Vasco.
This has been a long-pending demand of the vendors who have been struggling without toilet facilities for several years.
MMC Chairperson Kritesh Gaonkar along with Councillors Sandesh Mesta, Krishna Salkar, Saifullah Khan and the MMC sanitary inspectors inspected land identified for the project on Thursday.
In another significant move, the MMC has also decided to install mobile toilets at the site till the final project takes shape. The mobile toilets will be installed near the open space next to Chicken market behind the market.
The inspection was conducted at the site to check the feasibility of having a permanent toilet facility for market vendors and their staff.
The MMC sanitary inspector present at the inspection informed that the place had sewerage connections and there was a possibility of having a permanent toilet facility at the location.
The Vasco vegetable market, which houses around 90 stalls selling fruits and vegetables, had no toilet facility, compelling labours and vendors to urinate in the open.
Vendors have welcomed MMC’s decision to install a mobile toilet behind the market and thanked MMC for planning to a permanent toilet structure for vendors in the future.
Speaking to mediapersons, MMC Chairperson Kritesh Gaonkar said the inspection was decided after realizing that a lot of vendors and their staff were being picked by Vasco police for open defecation. “We will make sure that we provide good facilities. We want to take up all works that were not taken up in the last three years,” said Gaonkar.
