High-ranking officials of Goa Police on Tuesday evening visited the Makadmare (or Vanarmare) tribe who are dwelling in Bethora-Nirankal to take stock of the situation.

The officials visited Nirankal following pressure from Human Rights members. The members of the tribes said officials have assured to visit again.

It may be recalled that the huts of this tribe were demolished by villagers on Sunday. Ponda Police registered complaint against 15 locals, including 5 women, for demolishing the huts, but no arrests were made till late Tuesday evening.

South Goa Collector Swapnil Naik has sought a report of the forceful eviction by the locals.

Attempts to contact the DIG and SP-South did not bear any fruit as they did not answer the phone. But one Aaje of this community confirmed that the police officials visited them and assured to visit again on Wednesday.

“They visited us and went. We are forced to sleep out in the open. On Monday, some people gave us rice and dal,” Aaje told The Goan, late night.
