Tougher law in next session to make tenant verification mandatory: CM

PANAJI
Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Friday told the Goa legislative assembly that the government will enact a tougher law making tenant verification with the police a compulsion for landlords from the security and law-and-order standpoint.

Sawant, who himself holds the Home portfolio said, he will bring the legislation in the winter session of the House.

The chief minister made the statement after the Curtorim legislator Aleixo Reginald Lourenco made a strong case for such a law through a private member’s resolution.

“This House strongly recommends the Government to enact a legislation making it obligatory/mandatory for landlords/property owners to submit details of their tenants for police verification prior to renting out their premises,” read the resolution moved by Lourenco.

The Curtorim legislator while moving the resolution also made a case for provisions in the law to impose substantive penalties and ensure strict compliance to enhance security in the State.
