“You cannot touch a tourist…You cannot hit a tourist…Tourist is like God to us. Today Goan economy is surviving only because of the tourism industry.
Almost 70 percent of the people of Goa survive on tourism money directly or indirectly,” the deputy speaker said while addressing a news conference in his office in Calangute.
The deputy speaker admitted that at times tourists get tipsy and indulge in some unwarranted acts but instead of taking law in one’s hand, people can easily Dial 100 and allow police to take action against such errant tourists.
“Even if tourists make mistakes, we need to correct them. We should not hit them. We should try to understand them,” Lobo said.
He said history-sheeters in any part of the State who trouble tourists should be strongly dealt with and police will have to take tough action against such despicable acts against innocent tourists.
“I am going to write to the chief minister and the DGP not to take this type of people just for granted by issuing them a warning and letting them go. Police should begin proceedings to extern such people,” he said.
He said the acts of such people destroy the image of Goa and expressed the need to change the law to deal with such troublemakers more seriously.
He further said many bad elements along the coastal belt trouble the tourists by robbing their handbags and valuables.
He requested the SP North to make a list of such troublemakers in the villages of the coastal belt and also in the cities so that strict action is taken on them.
